Baptisms in November 1924
A brief History of Lindley Church as Given by Mr. R. A. McKown from memory May 14, 1939
In 1873 on the first Sunday in May a congregation organized in an old school house on the Fred Killion farm. There were eight or nine members. T.S. Tinsley Sr. and H.B. Fowler were elected as Elders. Mr. John Wise and Frank Fowler as Deacons. They began studying the principals of the New Testament. They met each first day of the week. Mr. Satterfield held a meeting in a brush arbor east of the school house. There was no Pastor employed. The Elders did the work of the church. Later a Mr. Shepherd was Pastor. They moved the church to the new school house. The church grew slow in numbers but firm in spirit. Then T.S. Tinsley Jr. preached every Sat and Sun for four weeks. During this meeting fifty-three members were added. A division in the beliefs of the church caused it to be moved from the school house to a brush arbor. Later a room in Mr. Tinsley’s house was used as a church. Then it was moved again to the school house.
A division came again and church was held at Mr. McKown’s house. Next there was a proposal to build a church. One Sunday a meeting was held to build a church. Mr. Tinsley, Mr. Bennett, Mr. R.A. McKown were placed on the committee to build a church house. Mr. McKown raised enough finance within $50 in one day to build the church house. The church was built in 1890. In November 1890 the first meeting was held in the church. They had songs, prayers, and broke bread. Mr. F.J. Yokeley was the first Pastor in the new church. He was followed by Mr. Joe Babb. A Mr. Hendrickson and John Gregg. Many additions were being made and later a Sunday School was organized.
This was recorded by Anna Stearns as given by Mr. McKown. Recorded May 17, 1939
